EFQM Excellence Model

"If your goal is to be excellent, you had better know what it looks like and by how far you are falling short."

What is it?

The British Quality Foundation define an excellent organisations as one that achieves and sustains superior levels of performance that meet or exceed the expectations of all of their stakeholders.

The EFQM Excellence Model is a well established, internationally recognised, framework used to assist improvement and help organisations strive to be excellent. Every organisation irrespective of their purpose or sector or even maturity need a management framework to measure their success and the EFQM Excellence Model is a practical, non-prescriptive framework that can do just that! The model provides a holistic view of an organisation and is used as an overarching framework for developing sustainable excellence.

There are three integrated components that sustainable success is realised through:

1) The fundamental concepts of Excellence- The underlying principles of achieving sustainable excellence:

2) The EFQM Excellence Model- The framework that allows the fundamental concepts and the RADAR logic to be converted into practice:

3) The RADAR logic- A dynamic assessment framework and management tool that gives a structured approach to assessing how your organisation is performing:

The EFQM model is most frequently used to conduct self assessments. In addition RADAR and the fundamental concepts are increasingly seen as powerful management tools.

When to use it:

TQMI has been helping organisations use the model since 1992 and can understand some of the issues organisations face.

  • Communicating Excellence in a practical way that people can relate to.
  • Training and education in the model (including assessor training).
  • Acting on the AFI's (Areas for Improvement) identified through a self assessment.
  • Getting buy in to the ideas and principles of Excellence.
